4. Educational Resources and Literature
“Domestic violence can be a difficult topic to talk about and to learn about. It’s distressing and can make us feel sad, angry, powerless, hurt. Taking in the multitude of facts and statistics can feel overwhelming and impersonal. Perhaps this even makes it easier to ignore. But it is a problem that needs to be brought more into public consciousness if we are ever to eradicate it. One way to make domestic violence education more accessible, palatable, and ubiquitous is through storytelling. Stories are powerful didactic tools that humanise, personalise, and empower the lesson we, as a society, need to learn. There are many narratives in print and on film that depict domestic and family abuse accurately and powerfully as included below.” Domestic Violence Service Inc, March 2022

5. Domestic and Family Violence Support Apps
The Sunshine Coast DV Coordination service has a great page which outlines a brief description and links to Apps that are available to support individuals who are experiencing domestic or family violence.
Women experiencing family violence are able to take control of their story by installing a smartphone app that enables them to identify, document and record patterns of intimate partner behaviour that make them feel scared, unsafe, or intimidated.
https://sunshinecoastdfvcoordination.com.au/SupportServices/SupportApps-455/
6. Legislation Governing Domestic and Family Violence in Queensland
The main law in Queensland governing Domestic and Family Violence is the Family Violence Protection Act 2012. There are also some relevant provisions in the Criminal Code 1899 that may apply.
The Act has three stated objectives:
1. Maximise the safety, protection, and wellbeing of people who fear or experience domestic violence and to minimise the disruption in their lives;
2. Prevent or reduce domestic violence and the exposure of such violence to children; and
3. Ensure that individuals who commit domestic violence are held accountable for their actions.
On 6 March 2024, Queensland also passed laws to criminalise coercive control as a standalone offence, becoming the second jurisdiction in Australia - after NSW - to do so. This is also referred to as “Hannah’s Law”. The Queensland legislation is expected to come into force in 2025 and will carry a maximum jail sentence of 14 years. Coercive control is a pattern of abusive behaviours over time that can include emotional, psychological and economic abuse, isolation, intimidation, sexual coercion and cyberstalking.
The Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia (Court) deals with families and relationships and a significant proportion of matters before the Court involve allegations of family violence.
Police Powers relating to Domestic and Family Violence in Queensland
If the Police reasonably suspect domestic violence is occurring or has occurred before their arrival, it is lawful for police to enter a place, search the premises and make reasonable inquiries, without a search warrant, to investigate domestic violence.
